Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan: "Big Momentum" for Southeast Asia
Singapore's Foreign Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, stated that Southeast Asia is enjoying "big momentum" even as the world faces growing uncertainty. He emphasised that surging demand for technology, particularly in semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), has helped regional economies beat expectations.
💬 "In the middle of a crazy world, in the middle of the fragmentation of the world order, trade fragmentation, supply chain disruptions, we have significant growth." — Dr Vivian Balakrishnan
Singapore itself recorded 6.1% growth in the first half of 2026, with Taiwan overtaking China as its largest trading partner. However, he also cautioned that the region's dependence on AI-related industries could become a vulnerability if global investment in the technology slows.

Haze affecting Singapore.
Worsening Haze Situation
Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, reported that the haze situation has worsened over the past week due to an increase in hotspots in Sumatra and Kalimantan, as well as unfavourable wind conditions. She warned that PSI levels could exceed 200, entering the "Unhealthy" range.
Government measures in place include:
Sufficient N95 mask stockpiles for distribution if needed.
Activation of haze shelters at community centres and RC/RN halls.
Sector guidance for schools, workplaces, and healthcare institutions.

Singapore Banks Hit by Stock Slump
Singapore bank stocks fell sharply in early October 2026 after JPMorgan warned that rising long-term bond yields would hurt Southeast Asian banks' profits in the third quarter. DBS Group and OCBC saw declines of over 4%, while UOB dropped 5.2%.
The Straits Times Index (STI) fell 3.5%, its biggest drop since April 2025 and the worst performer among major Asian indices. The slump came after Singapore banks had enjoyed years of gains driven by record profits and Singapore's rise as a global wealth management hub.
Economic Growth Forecast Raised
Singapore has raised its 2026 economic growth forecast to between 4.5% and 5.5%, supported by a 132% surge in electronics exports in August 2026 compared to the previous year. DBS's nowcast model estimates GDP growth exceeding 5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026.
Singapore's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 51.7 in September 2026, marking the 14th consecutive month in expansion territory.
